Izaan van der Merwe is a senior associate, patent attorney and notary public in KISCH IP’S patent department, with more than 6 years’ experience in intellectual property and in particular patents, designs, plant breeders’ rights and copyright. She specialises in patent litigation in the life sciences field, as well as designs, plant breeders' rights, unlawful competition and copyright litigation (in the Court of Commissioner of Patents, High Court of South Africa, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court). Her practice also covers patent and design prosecution in a broad variety of jurisdictions and fields of technology.
Izaan’s areas of technical expertise include life sciences in general, human and plant genetics, biotechnology, genetic modification and genetically modified organisms, pharmaceutical and forensic sciences.
Izaan is a member of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) and the Legal Practice Council of South Africa (LPC).
Izaan obtained a Bachelor of Science in Genetics (cum laude) in 2011, and a Bachelor of Laws (cum laude) in 2014. She has been admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa since 2017, as a notary public since 2018 and as a patent attorney since 2019.
Izaan is the author and co-author of various published articles.
